Eurocars Crete: Car Rental Company for Agios Nicolaos

Agios Nicolaos is only the second biggest town in the governmental district of Lassithi in Crete, but yet the seat of the district administration.

Because Ierapetra, the biggest of the three cities in the district, is on the south coast and does not have good traffic connections. But at least it has its own vehicle registration office, in contrast to Sitia which is the smallest of the three cities in the district.

The urban core covers a hill which spreads into the Mirambelou Bay as a peninsula. Due to this specific location, Agios Nicolaos does not have only one single port but even three of them.

On the south side of the peninsula there is a large marina which is also being used by fishing boats and other ships of comparable size.

On the north side however there is the pier where the ferry boats moor which sail from the other islands to Agios Nicolaos. It also sections the port basin off where the cruise vessels harbour which go e.g. for day cruises to the lepers' island of Spinalonga.

The third port is being used by the small fishing boats. It is the Lake Voulismeni which is a natural freshwater lake. The lake is connected to the northern port basin by an artifical channel, and the boats pass under a very low bridge when sailing from the lake to the port basin and back on this channel.

The touristic live of Agios Nicolaos concentrates there by the northern port and mainly around the Lake Voulismeni.

The nearest international commercial airport is located barely an hour's drive West, short before Heraklion.
