Bali was once an idyllic little fishing village on a picturesque little bay somewhere on the north coast of Crete.

The Old National Road which connects the two towns of Heraklion and Rethymnon runs 10 km south of Bali in a valley behind up to 1,078 meters high mountains, and a donkey path via Vlychada and Agia to Dafnedes was the only connection.

As the New National Road from Heraklion to Rethymnon was built close to the coast, Bali got a junction.

And to the idyllic little fishing village on the picturesque little bay the same thing happened as to many other idyllic little fishing villages on picturesque little bays: It was developed for tourism.

Today there are in and around Bali in Crete more hotels than fishing huts, along with restaurants, bars, supermarkets and other shops of all kinds. At rent-a-car companies such as Eurocars Crete you can order your rental car via the Internet directly to the hotel, or to the airport, or pick it up at the airport and drop it off at your hotel in Bali, as you wish.

Although Bali has changed, it still offers a beautiful sight. Especially when you come from Heraklion in the morning, the village with its white hotels is very picturesquely situated along the west side of the bay in the morning sun.

The hotels extend to the southern tip of the bay. There is a wide sandy beach, and another beach is just aside the small fishing port.

As you drive through the village and turn left just before the port, you come on a windy minor road to the Hotel Evita. There is in a small bay the third sandy beach of Bali, and the Atlantis Dive Center from Rethymnon start from here to some of their most beautiful diving excursions.

A beautiful view of Bali enjoys also the small village of Vlychada which lies on the south side of the bay, on the slope of the mountain on the other side of the national road. Up there, there are since some years some more comfortably equipped hotels.
