Stavromenos: Site Map

Stavromenos

is the biggest of the villages in the eastern part of the bay of Rethymnon Rethymnon on the Greek island of CretaNet: Collection of short portraits of Cretan cities and villages Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.

The New National Road from Rethymnon to Iraklion runs between the village and the beach.

The village itself spreads along the Old National Road over a distance of roughly 2 kms.

There are also some apartment facilities, and during recent years a number of holiday homes for letting by the week have been built on the slopes above the village which enjoy most beautiful views.

On the sea side of the New National Road however, there are almost exclusively private houses as in this section of the bay of Rethymnon, the beach is not being used frequently.

But there are beautiful sandy beaches west as well as immediately east of Stavromenos, in the two neighbouring villages of Sfakaki and Scaleta.

On the other hand, the wider supply of shops and catering concentrates in Stavromenos.

There are 3 supermarkets, 2 butchers' shops, a bakery, 2 tavernas, a sidewalk cafe and a grillroom.

On two hills above the village there are excavation sites. There is however not much more to be seen than on the photos in this web site.

Several found pieces from here can be viewed in the archeological museum at Rethymnon town. Some of them have been dated to the 5th century BC so they do not belong to the Minoan era, but to the ancient world.
