Georgioupolis
is a former fishing-village at the western end of the bay of
 Rethymnon
on the island of
Crete.
Apartments and hotels have established around the old village center and offer a variety of choice and size, and the old fishing port has been extended to a small marina.
The place's landmark is a tiny white chapel on the tip of the pier.

A small river, which is sourced 8 kms west in the in-land village of Vrysses, reaches the Mediterranean Sea at Georgioupolis.
The last section of the river changes into a long stretching lake where one can watch several species of water birds.
The river finally mixes with sea water to form the port of Georgioupolis.

In the village center and by the port there is a number of restful cafes and restaurants.
The original Mediterranean style can still be felt today.
East of the village center, the wind and the drift during thousands of years formed a mile-long sandy beach which continues under water.
It is therefore also suitable for small children.

To the east along the bay there are some large hotels and resorts, and on their beaches all kinds of watersports are on offer.
5 kms South-East of Georgioupolis there is the Lake Kournas which is said to be Crete's only freshwater lake.
At least as the only "real" one as it has a natural origin and water all-year round.
