Which cars suit to drive to the beach of Balos?
The lagoon of Balos is located at the northwestern tip of Crete between the Cape Gramvoussa and the small Cape Tigani about 50 km west of the town of Chania and 15 km north-west of Kastelli Kissamos.
It is famous for its bright blue and turquoise waters as well as for the wild natural beauty of its landscape.
During the summer, thousands of tourists visit Balos on day trips. The most of them come by excursion boats from Kissamos port, but some also use rental cars and jeeps.
The sea in the lagoon of Balos is very shallow and warm and therefore perfect for little kids. Beyond the rocks which line the lagoon, the water is deeper and colder, ideal for a snorkeling.
In the high season of July and August it is so crowded that arrival early in the morning is recommended.
The rent-a-car company ▶ Eurocars
recommends not to use rental cars
to go to Balos because the last 10 km are a rocky and bumpy track where breakdowns happen frequently.
The beach itself can anyway only be accessed on foot or by donkey. Cars can go to a parking on the peninsula, from there it is another 20 minutes walk on a rather stony path.
Economy cars such as ▶ Suzuki Alto
or ▶ VW Polo
do not suit for driving to this car park at all. Jeeps and SUVs
such as ▶ Skoda Yeti
or ▶ Suzuki Vitara
suit with some limitation.
Since the track is not a public road, the vehicle insurance does not cover damages which occur on this private path, and the roadside assistance will declare themselves incompetent as well. So to Balos you drive at your own risk.
To use the excursion boats from Kastelli Kissamos is the more comfortable and safer way to get to Balos beach.
