Things to do and to see in Rethymno
Rethymno is located midway between ▶ Heraklion
and ▶ Chania
and it is said to be the most beautiful town in Crete
The Old Town of Rethymno is very traditional. All the old houses with beautiful wooden doors, the narrow streets and the colourfull flowers climbing on the walls, will take you back to the era of Ottoman and Venetian domination.
Being located on the west side of the city above the Venetian Port, the Venetian Fortress "Fortezza" is an ideal spot to watch the sunset.
It was built by the Venetians in 1573 to protect the City of Rethymno from the Turks. At the foot of the fortress and above the sea there are small traditional tavernas and cafes where you can relax and enjoy snacks, coffee and ice cream.
At the entrance of the port of Rethymno there is also a car park which allows you to park your rental car and take a stroll of the Old Town.
The Venetian Harbour of Rethymno
Around the old Venetian Harbour you can find many fish restaurants. For those who love fresh fish it is the place for a romantic dinner.
The old stone built lighthouse that was made by the Turks in the 17th century is the most popular place for photo shooting and selfies.
The Pirate Boat offers day cruises along the coastline of Rethymno, and you can dive in the deep blue sea of the bay.
The Beach of Rethymno
On the east side of Rethymno there is a long sandy beach with crystal clear and warm water. During the summer it is crowded and very organized, with water sports, bars for cocktails, deck chairs and umbrellas. Because of its length you will also find more quiet places with less people.
How to get to Rethymno
Rethymno has no airport. The two airports of ▶ Heraklion
and ▶ Chania
are each one hour away.
Furthermore, the port of Rethymno has no connection to the port of Piraeus, so if you come from Athens by ferry boat you will arrive at the ports of Heraklion or Souda - Chania.
You may use bus or taxi transfers from the airports or ports, but the best way to visit Rethymno is to find an ▶ economic rental car
directly at the airports of Heraklion and Chania.
Parking in Rethymno City
It will not be a problem to find a parking place for your rental car in Rethymno.
Around the old town there are 5 parking lots, two of them on the west side and the east side of the port, and another 3 by the fortress ("Fortezza").
For about 3.00 Euros per hour you can relax and enjoy your walk around the town without worrying about police tickets.
Trips to the South Coast
From Rethymno is very easy to go by rental car to the south coast.
The village of ▶ Plakias
and the famous beach of Preveli are only 35 km away. On the way there you will pass the Kourtaliotiko Gorge
where you can stop for photos.
Close to Preveli Beach there is also the smaller and more quiet beach of Amoudi.
The road to the south coast
is very good, and it is very easy to find your way out of the center of Rethymno
as you can just follow the hundreds of ▶ rental cars
that other tourists use to go to the South every day.
